Hello everybody!

I am not a blogging person, I needed to create a blog for a class. The first blogs are related to this course, the next ones are going to be about myself, my life, my adventures. Feel free to add comments and enjoy!

Rainy Day

Seated at the table, I look outside. All I see through the dirty window is the red neighbour's house, a tree in his backyard and a white sky. White after the dark grey clouds have moved away. Hopefully the sun will come out... We still can see traces of rain. Just rain?! If you were where I am right now about an hour ago, you would know it was not just a little rain.

Since the morning the sky was a dark greyish. Around 2 o'clock, the sky got dark grey, almost black. Minutes later, a light rain started to fall, stronger and stronger. Then it all stopped suddently. Five minutes passes and without a warning... Brooooommmm. Thunder!

Now it all calmed down. For the Xth time today, I hear this song I can't hear anymore. The thing with listening the radio is that you can hear the same song 10 times in the same %&?% day!

Dieu, my shoulders are soo sore. I went biking yesterday with friends and for a first in years it was a loooong ride! Four hours in town, on a bike... I had never been that happy being caught in the rain. We decided to go back home, cutting in downtown (ouch) for a shortcut. I got home, jumped in the shower (actually more sliding cautionly in) and went straight to bed.

I have to study for my exam tomorrow... nah... just a little nap before...

18 Days!!!

Forum usage

Since I've started my computer course, I've learned many things about computer. Now I have a blog, even a web site (WHAT!?!) , yes a web site, and I am even interacting on a forum. Before that, I would have never thought that I would be doing those things one day. For me, blogs and forum was only a waste of time for people with no life. But, as I have to work on that for my course, I am getting pretty excited about my new blog and the forum.

Even though I don't really have something to say, It's fun just to "blog" about whatever, even the weather if you want!

As for the forum, a couple of years ago, one of my friend tried to introduce me to forums. We were two real fan of a British band unknown in America, and she was writting on forums about them (as it was pretty much the only way to keep in touch with news). She even tried to have me write "fan fics" (fan fiction stories) so I can post them on the forum. I started by reading a few "fan fics" on the forum, but it didn't take me long to get tired of it. I wasn't made for "foruming".

But since I am back in the forum motion, believe it or not, I'm enjoying it. I think it might be the fact that the subjects closely concern us and that I have feeds to add to topics. What I like is that the topics or not ONLY related to the course, so I can ask poeple for tips about what I will do during my summer vacation in West and help other people :)

Finally, computers are not only for losers :) Or if they are, well, I'm a loser (haha)

Computer Class Management

As a future teacher, I have a few worries about how to deal with some problems related to computer class. In a computer class, as each student has his computer, it is hard to control which site they surf on.

What should I do with students being caught on porn site? And HOW talk about it... What is the best way of approaching a student being caught on a porn web site?! On one hand, you want to intervene to this student but in another hand, you do not want to embarass this student in front of his peers. It sure is an important subject to talk about in class, but how to introduce it? Should we talk about it in class, in a subtle way or wait until the end of the class, and see personally the student?!

It's hard to think about a good way of approaching students as I haven't been in such situation.
Another worry I have is the plagiarism. I know how to find out if a student has cheated, but once again it's the "how to tell the student" and what to do with it. Do you give him a second chance of redoing his work or it's a final zero, and too bad for you?!?

I have so many worries about how to deal with taboo subjects. I guess the best way would be to discuss about it in class, in a way where you are not accusing the at fault student, but still... And I think it would be appropriate to get in touch with the parents and tell them the situation.

I still think that it's with the present moment situation that I will know what to do, but until then , I still have those worries.

What the heck it all means?

After two readings of this text (http://www.computerlanguage.com/2020.pdf) I still don't understand the purpose of it. Well, I have to tell you that computers and I have always been two distinct entities. They are always breaking up in my hands even though I'm trying to be nice...

The thing that confuses me the most is all the abbreviations for the industries or whatever it is for (I still haven't found out the link). Like what is ICT for? They just don't explain it, it is like they expect it to be granted, well it is NOT!

They also use a complicated vocabulary, not that the words are complicated, but the way or context in which they put it is so confusing for me. What "quality problems account for at least 180B USD/year in ICT (again) write-off" means?!?

After the second reading, I tried to figure out differences between Software Industry, Software Society and Free and Open Source Software. I came up with those definitions (which I'm not quite sure it is good):

Software Industry: It has a "massive financial capital" with a 30 years experience on social interest. Their profits are their only way to measure or deliver the true social benefit. (??)

Software Society: I haven't found a definition, but I think it is pretty much the same thing as Free and Open Source Software.

Free and Open Source Software: It is a program who gives the freedom to read, modify and share web server with public and make this server "Universal". It was the "boom" in tech-heavy disciplines, like financial services, military intelligence and so on... It aims for an increase of the innovation, quality, competition and the choice. (!?)

Even with this "homemade" definitions, I can't really see a difference in all this.
Do I really need to know it anyway?! I don't think I'll ever use it...

Technologies in Class!?!

Since a couple of years, technology has been part of our life, want it or not. I confess that I am not a technology-lover but I cannot go without it. I need it for school; research, homework, etc. But do I want, as a future teacher, to teach my students by cellphones or Ipods? I don't think so. Even though I agree that the use of technology in class could encourage them to go to class I still think that the old handwritting way is the best. What if every students were learning how to "write" on their LapTop? What about the " caligraphy" way? More and more, our children can even produce a text without at least 20 mistakes, if it is not more! We are going into a "chat" movement, where the use of language is not a problem anymore. Just the other day, my little cousin and I were "chating" on MSN and she was making mistakes I never thought it was possible to do.

Do technology really is a salvation for us? Doesn't it make the world a bit more complicated (for teacher)?

It is not a salvation if we have to get updated every year with technology to follow our students. Yes we can try to contribute to their development by computers, but in a few years, they will know more about the subject than us, and the roles will be reversed!

Wow a blog!

Last night I had my first class of computer application, in which the teacher wanted us to create a blog. What!? A blog, what is exactly a blog! Oh, I see. You want me to post my whole life on the net so poeple can read about me... Yeah okay.

So there we go.

Welcome into my life, my adventures. Welcome into Stephanie's adventures!

I hope you will enjoy... Even though I have no freaking idea what to post here.
